What to look for when you watch

Most dog training videos are shot to flatter the trainer. A few things tell you whether what you are seeing is real:

• Is there a distraction? A sit in an empty room proves very little. A down-stay with another dog walking past proves a great deal.
• Is the dog off leash? Off-leash work removes the physical guarantee, so what is left is genuine.
• Is the owner handling the dog, or only the trainer? The handover is the part that determines whether the training survives going home.
• Does the dog look comfortable? A dog that is complying but shut down is not the outcome anybody should be selling.
