Why the first few months decide so much
Puppies are not small dogs with fewer skills. They are in a socialization window that closes, and what happens inside it sets defaults that are far harder to overwrite later. A puppy that learns the world is safe and that people are predictable becomes a very different two-year-old than one that does not.
There is also a practical local reason to start early. Palm Beach County does not allow puppies under four months into its dog parks at all. That means the socialization window and the dog park do not overlap — you cannot outsource early socialization to Pooch Pines or Lake Woof even if you want to. It has to be deliberate, and it has to happen somewhere else.

Puppy classes are not a substitute for obedience
This is worth being blunt about. The AKC S.T.A.R. package is excellent at what it does, but it is not a replacement for Basic Obedience — which starts at five months, because of where your dog is in its growth and socialization window. Puppy work builds the foundation. Obedience builds the finished behavior. Anyone who tells you one session set covers both is selling, not advising.
The socialization window, and why it is not "meeting lots of dogs"
Socialization is widely misunderstood as volume. It is not. It is about a puppy forming the belief that novel things are safe and predictable — and that happens through calm, positive, controlled exposure, not through being overwhelmed.
A puppy that is mobbed at a park by five adult dogs has not been socialized; it has been taught that other dogs are unpredictable and overwhelming. That single experience can produce reactivity that takes months to undo. Quality beats quantity every time, and a puppy should leave every new experience still comfortable.

Why early training is cheaper than later training
Everything a puppy practises is being learned, including the things you have not chosen to teach. A puppy that rehearses jumping for eight weeks has eight weeks of repetitions supporting the behavior, and you are no longer teaching — you are competing with a habit.
That is the practical reason a $100 consultation early is better value than a $650 obedience package later. Not because the consultation does more, but because it prevents work.
What to do in week one
- Decide the house rules before the puppy arrives, and get everyone in the house to agree
- Start crate training immediately — it is easier now than at any later point
- Take potty breaks on a clock, not on a guess
- Handle the paws, ears and mouth daily so the vet is not a fight later
- Socialize deliberately and safely, on your vet's vaccination guidance
Results vary by dog. Major behavioral issues such as dog or human aggression cannot be guaranteed to be eliminated — our programs give you control and a clear plan to manage them.

Puppy training questions
How young can my puppy start training?
Puppy programs at Off Leash K9 Training take pups from eight weeks. The puppy board and train options are designed for dogs between eight weeks and five months. Basic Obedience starts at five months.
What does the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Package include?
Six completely private thirty-minute positive-reinforcement classes over six weeks, at $450. Topics include potty training, nutrition, first aid, vaccination schedules, socializing and imprinting. An AKC S.T.A.R. certificate is issued on completion.
Should I tap my puppy on the nose when he bites?
No. Hand-based corrections teach a puppy that hands are unpredictable, which makes handling and vet visits harder later. Off Leash K9 Training works bite inhibition by redirecting onto what the puppy may bite and rewarding the alternative — it is faster and it does not cost you trust.
Should I hold my puppy's mouth closed if they are biting?
