Obedience that works where you actually walk your dog
Palm Beach County's own dog park rules are a decent description of what a trained dog looks like. The county asks that dogs be leashed entering and leaving, restrained within six feet of the handler, kept under voice control — its words, meaning the dog comes when called — and removed at the first sign of aggression. There is a limit of two dogs per person, and puppies under four months are not allowed in at all.
Those rules are exactly where untrained dogs fall apart. Pooch Pines at Okeeheelee Park on Forest Hill Boulevard and Lake Woof at John Prince Memorial Park in Lake Worth are both unsupervised — the county says so plainly — so the only thing standing between your dog and a bad afternoon is your recall.
North of us, Jupiter has a two-and-a-half mile stretch of dog beach where dogs are allowed to run and swim off leash, running between the dune crossovers near Ocean Cay Park and Carlin Park. The county's own wording is that behaved, obedient, well-socialized dogs are welcome. Dogs are not permitted in the lifeguarded areas. A beach like that is either the best afternoon your dog has all month or a genuinely stressful one, and off-leash recall is the whole difference.
That is the standard our programs are built around — not a sit that only works indoors.
