Questions & Answers
Dog Training FAQ
The questions people actually ask us — answered directly, including the ones where the honest answer is "no".
Cost & pricing
What is the average cost to train your dog?
At Off Leash K9 Training West Palm Beach a puppy consultation is $100, four private obedience lessons are $650, and a two-week board and train is $2,900. Aggression programs start at $1,100.
How much does a 2 week board and train cost?
$2,900, including the e-collar, a two-hour handover session and lifetime refreshers. Owners nationally report paying roughly $2,000 to $3,000 for a two-week program, so this sits inside the normal market band.
Do you publish your prices?
Yes — all of them, on our pricing page and cost guide. Off Leash K9 Training does not run quote-only pricing, so you can see what every program costs before you contact us.
Is the e-collar an extra cost?
No. Obedience packages include the e-collar and training leash, and the two-week board and train includes the e-collar plus the handover session.
When do I pay?
All training packages must be paid in full before lessons are scheduled. Once payment has been received, Off Leash K9 Training contacts you to begin scheduling.
Is cheap dog training worth it?
For a friendly dog needing manners and exposure, a good group class is fine value. For a reactive dog, a bite case, or a problem specific to your home, it usually means paying twice. Off Leash K9 Training will tell you which situation you are in.
Programs & what to choose
Where can I find dog obedience training in West Palm Beach?
Off Leash K9 Training runs private obedience lessons throughout West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County, at our locations or in your home. Four lessons are $650; in-home programs start at $850.
What is the difference between board and train and private lessons?
Board and train builds the obedience for you — your dog lives with a trainer for two weeks. Private lessons teach you to handle your own dog. Off Leash K9 Training recommends lessons when you have time and board and train when the gap is large.
Will my dog still listen to me after board and train?
That is what the two-hour handover session is for. The obedience is transferred to you before your dog goes home, because training that only works for the trainer has not solved anything.
Do you offer a refresher if the training fades?
The refresher is free for life on the two-week board and train. If something slips months later, call Off Leash K9 Training and bring your dog back in at no additional charge.
Do you train service dogs?
No. Off Leash K9 Training West Palm Beach does not offer service dog training. We offer therapy dog preparation, obedience, board and train, puppy, off-leash and behavior programs.
Is a therapy dog the same as a service dog?
No. A therapy dog gives comfort to other people in facilities that invite them. A service dog is individually trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability and has legal public-access rights. Different categories entirely.
Methods, e-collars and corrections
Are e-collars the same thing as shock collars?
The hardware is related; the use is not. Off Leash K9 Training uses e-collars made specifically for our locations as a low-level communication signal the dog is taught to understand, not as a punishment device.
Can I feel the e-collar myself first?
Yes, and we encourage it. Ask at the assessment. Most owners are surprised how low the working level is, and Off Leash K9 Training would rather you tested the tool than trusted a description of it.
How do you say no in dog language?
Interrupt the behavior, then immediately give the dog a command it already knows — place, down, come — and reward that. "No" on its own carries no information about what your dog should have done instead.
What punishment do dogs hate the most?
The framing is the problem. Dogs associate a correction with whatever is most salient at that moment, usually you — not with a past action. What dogs genuinely find aversive is unpredictability from the people they depend on.
Should I tap my puppy on the nose when he bites?
No. It teaches a puppy that hands move unpredictably toward its face, which makes handling and vet visits harder later, and it often makes biting worse because it reads as a game. Redirect onto something the puppy may bite instead.
Should I hold my puppy's mouth closed if they are biting?
No. It teaches avoidance of your hands rather than bite control, and many puppies escalate. Bite inhibition is taught without physical restraint in the puppy programs at Off Leash K9 Training.
Puppies
How young can my puppy start training?
Puppy programs take pups from eight weeks. The puppy board and train options are built for dogs between eight weeks and five months, and Basic Obedience starts at five months.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for dog training?
It describes a newly adopted dog settling in: roughly three days to decompress, three weeks to learn the routine, three months to feel at home. It is an adjustment timeline, not a reason to delay training — habits form during it.
Should I take my puppy to a dog park?
Not before four months. Palm Beach County prohibits puppies under four months of age from its dog parks, so early socialization has to be done deliberately elsewhere.
What does the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Package include?
Six private thirty-minute positive-reinforcement classes over six weeks at $450, covering potty training, nutrition, first aid, vaccination schedules and socialization. An AKC S.T.A.R. certificate is issued on completion.
Aggression & reactivity
Can you guarantee you will fix my dog's aggression?
No, and nobody honest will. Off Leash K9 Training is clear that major behavioral issues such as dog or human aggression cannot be guaranteed to be eliminated. What our programs give you is control and a plan to manage it.
My dog has bitten someone. Will you take the case?
Possibly, after an evaluation. Bite and human-aggression cases go to the board and train track — $3,500 for two weeks or $4,000 for three. Nothing is booked before the evaluation.
Do I need a dog behaviorist or a dog trainer?
If fear, anxiety or possible pain is driving the behavior, a veterinary behaviorist should be involved. For control, obedience and structured desensitization, that is the work Off Leash K9 Training does. Often both are needed.
Is my dog aggressive or just reactive?
Reactive dogs overreact to specific triggers, often from fear or missed socialization. Aggression involves a genuine threat of harm. The programs differ, so Off Leash K9 Training establishes which at the assessment.
Should I punish my dog for growling?
No. A growl is a warning, and a dog punished for growling may stop warning and bite without notice. Treat growling as information and get the dog assessed by Off Leash K9 Training.

Where can my dog legally go off leash near West Palm Beach?
Jupiter Dog Beach allows off-leash running and swimming along a 2.5-mile stretch, excluding lifeguarded areas. County dog parks are fenced off-leash areas. Dogs are not allowed on county beaches.
Is my dog too old to be trained?
Almost certainly not. Regardless of breed, size or age most dogs can reach a high standard of obedience. Call Off Leash K9 Training, describe your dog, and we will tell you honestly what to expect.
