Open land is a different training problem
Loxahatchee Groves became the thirty-eighth municipality in Palm Beach County when it incorporated on 1 November 2006, though the area has been settled since 1917. It remains rural in character — acreage, groves, livestock, and properties where the boundary is a long way from the back door.

Why distance is the whole skill
A recall that works at twenty feet tells you almost nothing about what happens at two hundred. At real distance you lose volume, you lose body language, and you lose the implicit threat that you could simply walk over and collect the dog. What remains is whether the dog has genuinely learned to come back, or has merely learned to come back when coming back was easy.
