Dog Training in Jupiter, Florida

Two and a half miles of off-leash beach

Jupiter is the northernmost town in Palm Beach County, sitting at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River with the Atlantic to the east. Its defining feature for dog owners is Jupiter Dog Beach: a 2.5-mile stretch where dogs may run and swim off leash, running from the dune crossover north of Ocean Cay Park on Marcinski Road up to the crossover south of Carlin Park on A1A. Parking is free, and there are restrooms and showers at both ends.

The invisible boundary problem

Dogs are not permitted in the lifeguarded areas. Service animals under the ADA are the exception. That boundary means nothing to your dog — there is no fence, no change in surface, nothing to notice. It exists entirely in your ability to call your dog back before it crosses.

Add surf noise, wind, other dogs, and a horizon full of things worth chasing, and you have the most demanding recall test in the county. A recall that works in your back garden is not the same behavior.

What actually holds up on that beach

• Full off-leash recall — first call, at distance, under distraction
• Down from a distance — the emergency stop when recall would bring your dog through the problem rather than away from it
• Off — for whatever has washed up, and for the other dog that does not want to play
• Off-leash heeling — so you can move past the lifeguarded stretch without a struggle

Where dogs cannot go in Jupiter

Worth knowing before you drive somewhere: Palm Beach County prohibits dogs at Riverbend Park and Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park, both in Jupiter, along with all county beaches, pools and nature centers. Service animals as defined by the ADA are the exception. Elsewhere in county parks, dogs are permitted on a leash no longer than six feet.

So the picture in Jupiter is unusually split: one of the most permissive off-leash beaches in South Florida, and two of the county's strictest no-dog parks, a few minutes apart.

Getting there

Two routes. Off-leash training through the eight-lesson package at $1,000 builds distance work and the focused heel with you doing the handling. The two-week board and train at $2,900 builds the full off-leash set including recall, then hands it to you in a two-hour session.

Either way, the standard we train to is the one the beach already asks for.

Results vary by dog. Major behavioral issues such as dog or human aggression cannot be guaranteed to be eliminated — our programs give you control and a clear plan to manage them.
