These three get confused constantly, and the difference is not cosmetic.

• A therapy dog is trained and temperament-tested to provide comfort to other people — in hospitals, care homes, schools, reading programs. Access is by invitation of the facility.
• A service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. That is a legal category with public-access rights.
• An emotional support animal is not task-trained and is a different category again.

What the course covers

The program is eight specially designed lessons at $1,000, built around what therapy dog testing actually asks of a dog: steadiness around strangers, neutrality around medical equipment and unfamiliar surfaces, calm greetings, reliable obedience under mild pressure, and an owner who can read and handle their dog in a room full of distractions.

Many of our former clients pass their therapy dog certification comfortably after the program. On successful completion, we can evaluate and certify you and your dog through Therapy Pets Unlimited.

Which dogs are actually suited

Temperament does most of the work here, and it cannot be installed. The dogs that do well are genuinely social, recover quickly from surprises, and are not bothered by being touched by strangers. A dog that merely tolerates people is not a therapy dog candidate — tolerance runs out, usually at the worst moment.

If your dog is anxious, reactive or strongly handler-focused, this is not the right program, and we will say so at the assessment. There is no shame in that; most dogs are not therapy dogs.

What the testing actually looks for

Therapy dog evaluations vary by organisation, but the underlying question is consistent: is this dog safe and steady with strangers, in an unfamiliar building, under mild pressure, for a sustained period? The specifics that catch dogs out are rarely obedience failures. They are things like

• A stranger reaching over the dog's head to pet it
• Unsteady handling — a hand that grips rather than strokes
• Medical equipment: wheelchairs, walkers, IV poles, sudden mechanical noise
• Slippery or unusual flooring
• Being approached by two or three people at once
• Long periods of doing nothing in a busy room

A dog that can hold a settle for twenty minutes in a noisy space is doing more of the work than a dog with a flashy recall.

How to prepare between lessons

Controlled exposure is the whole game, and it has to be controlled rather than simply frequent. Practise being handled by people who are not you, in places that are not your house, for short periods that end while the dog is still comfortable. Ending on a good repetition matters more than extending one.

Resist the temptation to test your dog by dropping it into the busiest environment you can find. Overwhelming a candidate dog is the fastest way to create the exact hesitancy the evaluation screens for.

Obedience is the entry requirement

Therapy work sits on top of solid obedience, not instead of it. If your dog does not yet have a reliable down, place and recall, start with obedience training or a board and train and come back to therapy prep afterwards. It is a cheaper path than failing a certification test.

Results vary by dog. Major behavioral issues such as dog or human aggression cannot be guaranteed to be eliminated — our programs give you control and a clear plan to manage them.
